The style of this age, sometimes referred to as the ?Garland Style,“ appears to be the continuation of the goldsmith tradition of the 18th century. Delicate openwork designs captivated jewelers‘ attention. The introduction of platinum as the principal material in the jewelry making process made lightweight designs possible. Platinum was often used in the form of fi nely beaded millegrain or narrow knife wire settings to create the illusion of lightness. The monochrome look of diamonds and platinum became predominant, as the metal enhanced the radiance of diamonds.

Graceful jewelry decorated with openwork garland, lace, tassel, and bow motifs was worn in abundance. Pearls were another favorite of this period. Long strings of pearls were worn in combination with hokers and lavaliers. Popular stones of the period were sapphires, peridots, chrysoberyls, and amethysts. Smaller novelty, sporting, and bar brooches were worn during the day.
